The Time Machine -
1. If you could travel backwards or forwards in time, where would you choose to go and why? Discuss your ideas and then write a detailed piece explaining why you have made this choice.
Explain what you think you would see and hear, and how life would be different. Would you try and change anything? What people might you meet? Explain in full.
2. Look back at the extract from The Time Machine in your Literature Through Time booklet.
Question: How does the writer show how things are different when the narrator travels in time? What words does he use to show the state that the narrator finds things in? Use PEA in your answers here.
3. Re-write the extract from the point of view of people the narrator sees eating lots of fruit. How would they feel to see the time machine arrive? What would they think was going on? Are they as simple and primitive as the narrator thinks they are?
4. Read the extract from Gulliver's Travels in the booklet. Use PEA to compare this extract with the one from The Time Machine - How do the two writers describe the places they find themselves in? What techniques do they use, and how effective are they?
